“My card is full!” I looked over at Tommy and Kaelyn mid-pose during their New Hampshire spring family session, “That has never happened before!” I added, reaching into my bag for a new memory card. In all the sessions I’ve ever photographed, I’ve never filled a card by halfway through a session! The Montgomery family is too precious that my card filled quickly with so many sweet portraits of them. As I flipped open the card slot on my camera, Tommy laughed, “It sounds like you said that your heart is full!” I smiled, “That too!” I replied, popping the new card into my camera before holding it up to my face to compose the next shot.
But then I paused, and I put my camera down for a second. I am truly grateful to serve Tommy, Kaelyn, and their sweet family and recognize what an honor it is to do so. It was important to me to stop right then – at that moment – and share that with them, straight from my heart. We were hundreds of frames into their session and my heart was genuinely so incredibly full. I was having the best time, and it was worth it to pause and recognize that. Every time someone trusts me to capture portraits for them, it is such an honor and a gift. They are inviting me into the building of their legacy, and that is the most fulfilling part of this work.
The Ultimate Honor as a Photographer
It is even more of an honor when your client is also a photographer and they choose you. Their eyes are precisely tuned to look for the very best in a photographer and their work. They know exactly what they want, and all that goes into making those images happen. Tommy is a gifted wedding and portrait photographer with a heart of gold (be sure to visit his website and Instagram to follow along with his work!). Being chosen by a photographer to be their photographer is the ultimate honor in this work.
As if my heart wasn’t full enough, their family was a joy to work with. Big sister Rylan was incredibly well behaved, sweet as can be, and the very best dress-twirler I ever did see. And we share a favorite Bible story (courageous and kind Joseph, of course!). Little brother Cal has the cutest smile and clapped his way through the session with joy. Watching them interact together was absolutely precious, the mark of a sweet sibling friendship that will continue to grow throughout their lives.
To Tommy, Kaelyn, Rylan, and Cal:
Thank you for sharing such a special time with us! Dillon and I had the best time with you, on an evening that seemed to be perfectly created by the One who holds the ultimate paintbrush. From the glowy golden light to the vibrant blooming trees and the perfect temperature, it was so good. Your family is absolutely precious. Tommy and Kaelyn: you are doing an incredible job. You model Christ in the way you interact with your children and one another. The way you look at each other affirms that you are living the love story He’s written for you and building a beautiful legacy with your family. Thank you for trusting me to capture these images for you and help you preserve this little slice of life. My heart (and my card) really truly is so full 🙂
