It’s no secret that I think engagement sessions are an incredibly important and valuable part of the wedding photography process. In this post, I am going to share how to make the most of your engagement session. Once your session is on the calendar, there are some steps you can take to prepare well. And thankfully, they are fun! Read on for my recommended action items.

Outfit Considerations

Your engagement session provides a great opportunity to wear something special. I recommend that couples plan two outfits for their session, with one being dressier and one being more of an everyday look. This creates great variety in your gallery with lots of images to enjoy! If you’d prefer to not purchase new pieces, renting from a curated collection such as Rent the Runway can be an excellent choice. I recommend sticking with neutrals and soft colors because these hues photograph the most beautifully!

Hair and Makeup

Much like choosing special outfits to wear, your engagement session provides a great opportunity for having your hair and makeup done professionally. Treat yourself to a blowout if you’d like! And soft, natural-looking false lashes can be a very pretty touch. If you appreciate a good manicure, I recommend a soft pink or nude color. This is pretty and feminine without distracting from your gorgeous ring!

Plan Ahead and Leave Early

Since your session is scheduled around the best light, it is important to start on time! I recommend giving yourself plenty of time to get there, leaving earlier than needed to allow for traffic. For sessions taking place in the city, consider leaving extra early and grabbing a coffee or a cocktail beforehand!

Care for Your Ring

Have your ring cleaned before your session so it will be extra sparkly for your portraits. Your engagement session will likely be the first time your ring is professionally photographed, which is all the more reason to ensure it looks its best! Many jewelers will provide this service for free, so check with the place where your ring was purchased from!

Make a Date of It

Plan a fun date out afterward to take advantage of being dressed up. I absolutely LOVE having portrait sessions in the city, giving my couples plenty of options for a lovely evening on the town afterward!
