Welcome to the KSP blog, a place where I share my work, wisdom, and a peek into my everyday life. I'm so glad you're here and hope you stay awhile!

Hi! I'm Kyla.

I am a firm believer that wedding photography should be a complete experience, not merely a transaction. While every couple deserves to have high-quality images, there is so much more to it. The foundation of an excellent wedding photography experience is building a relationship between the photographer and the couple. Your photographer will spend more time with you on your wedding day than almost anyone else! This makes it all the more important to have a connection. They should be someone you trust and enjoy being around. In this post, I am going to explain the importance of an engagement session and the role it plays in the process.

One of the most important ways I build a strong foundation with my couples starts long before their wedding day. After they’re officially welcomed into the KSP family, we schedule their engagement session. It is a fundamental piece of the KSP experience and something that should not be skipped.

Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Most couples are not naturally comfortable in front of the camera. I completely understand this! Dillon and I felt the same way before our engagement session. It can feel awkward as you get started, and that’s okay! One of the benefits of having an engagement session is that it allows you to overcome some of those nerves. That way, you are comfortable in front of the camera on your wedding day.

Speaking from experience, our engagement session worked wonders for putting us both at ease before our wedding. We were both a bit nervous in the days leading up to it. But then we spent the whole drive home talking about how much fun we had. After that, we were truly excited for our wedding photos. Our engagement session transformed our perspective and helped us to know what to expect with portrait time on our wedding day.

Connect With Your Photographer

As I shared earlier in this post, your engagement session provides a great opportunity for us to get to know each other better. I love talking with my couples about their story, the dreams they have for the future, and the things they’re most excited about for their wedding day. My hope is that my couples and I will all feel like good friends by their wedding day (which is so important because we’ll be spending so much time together that day!). I absolutely love to celebrate with them on their wedding day and it makes all the difference to build that connection together ahead of time.

Build Your Legacy

Your engagement is such a sweet season, marking the days leading up to your marriage. While your wedding photos will become a valuable part of your family’s legacy, this can be elevated by having engagement photos, too. With engagement lasting upwards of 12-18 months for many couples, this is a great way to capture a different season in your relationship! While it’s absolutely lovely and special to have photos of you dressed to the nines on your wedding day, your engagement session provides an opportunity to have photos of you in more of an everyday or semi-formal look. It’s great to have variety!
