While I just recently started to pour my heart into building Kyla Shattuck Photography, I’ve been laying the foundation for it for the past decade! Little by little, the dream of becoming a wedding photographer began to take root in my heart. And little by little, I began to take steps to make it happen. If you enjoy reading stories as much as I do, you’re in for a treat!

Becoming a Bride

My love of weddings continued and in Fall 2016, it was my turn. I was becoming a bride! Dillon proposed to me on October 27, 2016, surrounded by twinkly lights in the spot where our story began (more on that another day!). During our engagement, I gained first-hand experience of what it’s like to be a bride and what it means to prepare for a strong marriage. Dillon and I were intentional as we planned our wedding, but we focused even more on planning well for our marriage. It gave me a whole new heart for brides and serving couples through the sweet season of engagement and newlywed life!

Through choosing our photographer (Ruthie, naturally!) I learned what was most important to me in wedding photography. Firstly, I knew I wanted a photographer who felt like part of the family (which she did!). Secondly, I wanted light, airy photos that were timeless and full of joy. And most importantly, I wanted photos that captured the little moments of the day that I may have otherwise missed because I couldn’t be everywhere at once as a bride! I also took note of what stood out from my overall experience as a bride – photography and beyond! – and added that to my repertoire of wedding wisdom.

Building a Legacy

Dillon and I got married on June 10, 2017, in a sun-strewn little church in Historic Amherst Village. It was a beautiful day, and I wanted to bottle it all up to last forever. Having a photographer who I cherished and trusted made all the difference on the day-of, too! In the weeks following our wedding day, Ruthie delivered our wedding photos and we were overjoyed. I was smitten as we looked through the gallery together and relived our wedding day. It was incredible to have tangible memories from our day, memories that captured how everything had looked and felt. Most importantly, the photos now serve as heirlooms for our family’s legacy. As a result, this motivated me to want to help others build their family legacy, too.
